Abbey of Santa Maria of Vezzolano

The Abbey of Santa Maria of Vezzolano is amongst the most important medieval monuments of Piedmont . It is located in Albugnano, in the district of Asti.

Built in the IX Century, perhaps on the ruins of a preexisting church – since the Canons of Vezzolano were already mentioned in a document dated back to the year 740 by King Liutprando, it was rebuilt during the XII Century.

According to a legend, Charlemagne, while he was hunting in these lands, had three skeletons appearing in front of him. Such vision would have induced him to build the Abbey. The gate of the Abbey of Santa Maria of Vezzolano is quite rich, and its belfry is realised in Romanesque style. Of particular value are the main altar, the frescoes, the cloister  and the chapter house.
