In May, in Monterosso al Mare, there’s the Festival of Lemons. The Citrus trees, cultivated in the Cinque Terre are the main protagonists of the festival with lemonades, ice cream, granites, creams, jams, cakes… everything you can prepare with these fruits will be done and offered in the stands and shops of the village, with the inhabitants dressed in yellow for the occasion! Many other typical products of Liguria will be offered to visitors for a triumph of flavors.

INFIORATA
In June, in Monterosso al Mare, there’s the Infiorata. For the procession of Corpus Domini, the streets are decorated with wonderful colorful flowers, petals and leaves to form religious or artistic representations. Early in the morning, the inhabitants begin to create the figures, which are often elaborate and complex, revealing excellent artistic abilities to form a carpet that is over a mile long. The natural coloring of flowers and leaves gives amazing shades of color.
SAN GIOVANNI BATTISTA
At the end of June in Monterosso al Mare, San Giovanni Battista, patron saint of the town, is celebrated. On the eve, for tradition, a bonfire is prepared, a symbol of purification, to burn old stuff, and on June 24, to commemorate the birth of the saint, the solemn procession takes place with the statue that goes through the streets of the old town centre. The festival ends late at night with fireworks. In the same days of the celebration of St. John the Baptist, he is also celebrated as patron in Genoa.
FESTA DELL’ACCIUGA
In June in Monterosso al Mare, there’s the Festival of the Achovy. This variety of common but delicious fish is prepared with a filling and then fried. At the festival, they use a nice fish-frying pan and the dish is combined with slices of fried bread and a good glass of white wine, the festival begins for lunch in Piazza Garibaldi and continues throughout the day. At the same time there are boat trips to admire the beautiful coasts of the Cinque Terre.

PRESEPE LUMINOSO
In the Christmas period in Manarola, there’s the Illuminated Crib. The terracing are common in Liguria, they are necessary to extract space to cultivate, in one of these hills next to Manarola there’s the Illuminated Nativity, considered the largest crib in the world. The figures are in natural size made of recycled materials and there are more than 15,000 light bulbs. On the terracing we can see the shepherds and flocks, fish and other figures up to the hut of the nativity with the sacred family, the comet star and the Three Wise Men who are about to reach it. A magical atmosphere throughout the Christmas season with the illuminated hill seen from the sea. The crib is operative on December 8 and stays until January 31st. On the day of the ignition there’s a torchlight procession for the Immaculate and in the evening, behind the crib, there are fireworks to start the Christmas holidays.
