Set on a verdant ridge with views over an ever-changing landscape, Locanda del Gallo is half way between delightful Perugia and ancient Gubbio, and within easy reach of other jewels in Umbria like Foligno. From there one can also set out on one of the many well-designed routes for a walk in nature.
The Locanda del Gallo estate expands over 28 hectares of grounds that include gardens, meadows, olive groves, woods, a kitchen garden and natural terraces that descend to the torrent in the valley below. The Locanda occupies an ancient mansion of the 17th century that belonged to the Marquises Capranica del Grillo and that the proprietors Paola and Irish have restored with care, preserving the original two-floor building in natural stone. Their love of the Far East is visible in the rooms and their colonial furniture, acquired during their many travels.
In Santa Cristina near Gubbio, surrounded by the greenery of the woods, air conditioning is unnecessary, and to be completely away from life’s frenzied pace there is no television available. At the Locanda del Gallo in Umbria, life outdoors is made even more enjoyable by the large salt-water pool amidst the hills and, close by, the hot tub set amongst trees.
Locanda del Gallo has ten comfortable, welcoming rooms to relax and rest. In the morning, sitting under a pergola in the meadow, breakfast is a feast of fresh bread and homemade cakes and yogurts. Later, back from an excursion, one can retreat to the diminutive Moorish spa for a Turkish bath, and sit in the relaxation room with large windows looking out over the surrounding green views, sipping a herbal tea.
