Sovana
Sovana, in the province of Grosseto, is a fraction of the municipality of Sorano. It is known as an important Etruscan center, as well as an ancient medieval and Renaissance hamlet but also as an episcopal venue.
The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul that was built by Gregorio VII in the tenth century is of particular interest, while in piazza del Pretorio there is the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore of the twelfth century. On the same square you can also admire the Church of San Massimiliano that dates back to the fourth century.
Then, important examples of architecture are the Palazzetto dell’Archivio of the twelfth century, the Praetorian Palace, which today is a museum, the Bourbon del Monte Palace, as well as the Bishop’s Palace and the house where Ildebrando Aldobrandeschi, the future Pope Gregorio VII, was born, which is located in Via di Mezzo.
Do not miss to visit the Rocca Aldobrandesca. Near the considerable archaeological area there is also the famous Oratorio rupestre of Sovana, while the Chapel of San Sebastiano is located inside the so-called City of Tufo, where there are precious Eneolithic testimonies such as the Hildebrand Tomb.
Montemerano
The famous Church of San Giorgio of the fourteenth century, in which are preserved some works of great value, is really valuable. Another point of interest is the Pieve of San Lorenzo in 1188, with its San Lorenzo Tower, as well as the Church della Madonna del Cavalluzzo of the fifteenth century, which is located not far from the beautiful old town of Montemerano.
You should also see then the defensive walls built by the Aldobrandeschi between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, as well as the beautiful Piazza del Castello, a scenic agora with an amazing integrated medieval print.
