Cerrate
Near Cerrate, which is the Lecce province, rises the notable Abbey of Santa Maria built by the Count di Lecce, Tancredi d’Altavilla, towards the end of the 12th Century. The structure represents one of the most significant examples of Romanesque stile visible in Puglia.
Next to the 13th Centruy Abbey you will find the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions of Salento, an art museum comprising two sections, which offers a very enchanting journey through time. In the first section there are precious architectural artefacts belonging to the Pugliese Romanesque era, while in the second section you will find rural and artisan memorabilia from the Salentino area.
Acaya
An exclusive holiday at the Tenuta Monacelli, which can be found in Cerrate, in Puglia in the Lecce province, will allow you to admire Acaya, which is a small community of few more than 400 inhabitants which is itself also in the Lecce province.
The unusual thing about this small and pleasant place, not far from the sea, is that it represents a rare example of Fortified Fortress, with a frame work which shows an orthoganal road system, all dating back to the 16th Century.
The village was entirely rebuilt, and even the urban infrastructure was reorganised, e fortified by Gian Giacomo dell’Acaya, the well-known military architect, between 1521 and 1535. The creation of the notable Castle was also his work. Also of great interest are is the Church of Santa Maria della Neve from the 13th Century, the Cappella di San Paolo from the 18th Century and the Porta di Sant’Oronzo.
