The Sibillini Mountains extend for 40 km between Marche and Umbria. Protected by the National Park of Sibillini Mountains, they are included between the districts of Ascoli Piceno, Fermo, Macerata and Perugia.
This area of outstanding natural beauty is a natural habitat for many animals, such as the Marsicano brown bear, the wolf, the Abruzzo chamois, wild boar and golden eagles. Inside the park there are the Center of Cervo and recovery of wildlife in Castelsantangelo sul Nera, and the Anthropological Museum in Amandola.
There are many paths and routes you can take, either on foot or by bike, with huts and refreshment stands created for visitors. The Great Ring of Sibillini is a route of 120 km organized by the park with signs and maps to guide walkers along the entire area.
Among the points of interest there’s the Fiastra Lake, a reservoir in Fiastra, in the district of Macerata which hosts fishing competitions and sport events, and is surrounded by a cycle path. Adjacent to the lake, the Red Blades offer an extraordinary show with their jagged and sharp peaks.
In Montemonaco, in Ascoli Piceno district, there is the Lake of Pilato. It owes its name to a legend saying that the body of Pontius Pilate was thrown into the lake, and during the Middle Ages was considered a haunted lake. It’s also called lake with glasses because its shape is constantly changing depending on the inflow of water, often forming two separated bodies of water.
