Montallegro is a small village in Agrigento district, in Sicily. Is located at the foot of the Hill Suso, where the remains of the first settlement, which was abandoned in the seventeenth century when the inhabitants moved to the lowland, are still visible.
Agriculture has been for centuries the main activities of the village, today it is especially affected by the production of olive oil, almonds and citrus, including the Ribera Orange DOP. In Viale della Vittoria there is the Museum of Country Life. Here you can see the most different objects such as plows, branches, scythes, harrows, presses and various tools divided into sectors: the rural world, home environment, artisan life. There’s also the traditional Sicilian cart with the typical hand-painted decorations.
In the center, the Main Church of San Leonardo is dedicated to the patron saint of the village. This little church with simple lines with the bell tower, dates back to the eighteenth century and was restored in the 90’s.
From Montallegro you can reach the beautiful beach of Bovo Marina in a few minutes. Located in the Gulf of Eraclea, it consists of fine white sand and crystal clear water, on the edge there are the characteristics rocks of Capo Bianco and a pine forest.
Near the village, there’s the Gorgo Pond, a natural reserve, managed by LIPU. Much appreciated for the practice of birdwatching, in the pond you can see migratory birds and cormorants, coots, herons and flamingos. Along with many other animals including the turtle.
From Monteallegro you can easily reach Agrigento, Siculiana, the Valley of the Temples, and the Natural Reserve of Torre Salsa.
