Lake Maggiore, also called Verbano is the second largest Italian Lake. Is the largest among the subalpine lakes, that’s why is called Maggiore, and is located between Switzerland and Italy. The Italian shore is included in the districts of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Novara and Varese.
Lake Maggiore includes several islands, well connected to each other by an excellent navigation system, among the most beautiful and most visited islands there’s the Isola Bella where you can visit the beautiful Borromeo palace with its rooms, sculptures, works of art, and its impressive gardens.
Among the towns near the lake, Arona in Novara district and Angera in Varese district, are two beautiful villages which are located facing each other and together were a strategic point for the control of the lake because of the strongholds built in defensive purposes. The Rock of Arona, destroyed after various battles, still has its ruins and the area is used as a park with gardens and animals, and also hosts many cultural events. The Rock of Angera however still dominates the lake with its grandeur. Inside of it we can visit the Hall of Justice with its beautiful frescoes and the Doll and Toy Museum.
In Leggiuno in Varese district, there’s the hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso. This monastery is located in a picturesque location overlooking the waters of the lake. The walls have a Renaissance style and a bell tower dating back to the fourteenth century, 15 meters high.
