Cefalù is situated in Palermo district, in Sicilia. it is situated on the foot of a promontory, the Rocca of Cefalù, it overlooks the sea and its beautiful territory is included in the Park of Madonie.
Cefalu is a popular seaside town and summer is the ideal period to feel the emotion of the beautiful coastline, but this town is characterized by an old town centre that preserves the medieval structure with narrow streets built with the stones of the coast and the limestone extracted from the Rock of Cefalu . Thanks to its strategic position we have many fortified buildings mainly built in the Norman period.
Also the Cathedral of Cefalu is a place of worship, it was built in the twelfth century with a structure that is similar to the fortress that dominates the town and the sea with the impressive Norman towers on the sides of the facade. At the inside it preserves wonderful Byzantine mosaics belonging to a pre-existing basilica built in uncertain date. Other Byzantine decorations are present in the presbytery, made by the masters called from Constantinople by Ruggero II. These works are part of the World Heritage Sites since 2015.
Also from the Middle Ages there’s the construction of Osterio Magno, a fortified palace in the old town centre. The palace was built on pre-existing Greek buildings and to the quadrangular base dating back to the Norman period were added the raised floors making the tower even more impressive, and the facade with alternating bands of tuff and lava stone that give a two-tone appearance. The last restoration in the nineties brought to light several archaeological finds including bronze coins dating back to the fourth century, and numerous ceramics.
