BERGAMO
The Cathedral of Bergamo, or Cathedral of St. Alexander, is characterized by different architectural styles. It is situated on the remains of an ancient Roman church, later it was rebuilt and dedicated to St. Vincent. The current building was completed at the end of the sixteenth century, and the façade was rebuilt in the 800.
The Cathedral is leaning against the Palazzo della Ragione, a magnificent example of medieval architecture, built in the twelfth century. The structure is characterized by its arched loggia, the battlements on the roof, bas-reliefs inside and a sundial on the floor.
In front of the Cathedral, there’s the Baptistery of Santa Maria Maggiore. It was built in the fourteenth century, is a small octagonal building made of white and red marble of Verona.
Piazza Vecchia, Bergamo
Piazza Vecchia is the heart of the town, with the Contarini Fountain surrounded by stone sphinxes. The square is bordered by the Civic Tower, called the bell tower, the Palazzo della Ragione and the Palazzo Nuovo.
The Accademia Carrara, housed in a beautiful neoclassical building, is an academy of fine arts and seat of the Art Gallery of Bergamo. Carrara was the Count to leave his rich and prestigious collection of paintings to the town of Bergamo at the end of the eighteenth century. Since then many other donations have enriched the gallery.
The famous composer Gaetano Donizetti was born in Bergamo. In the town we can find the house where he was born, the Music Institute and the museum located in the palace of Mercy, and the Donizetti Theatre, opened in 1800 and named after the master in 1897.
Church of San Tomè, Almenno San Bartolomeo
ALMENNO SAN BARTOLOMEO
Almenno San Bartolomeo, or Almen San Bartolomè, is a town in the district of Bergamo. Here we can admire the Church of San Tomè, dedicated to St. Thomas, built in Romanesque style with a circular plan. Inside, the columns and the capitals placed on several floors outline a unique and charming place.
TRESCORE BALNEARIO
Trescore Balneario is a small town in Val Cavallina. Known for its thermal baths since Roman times, it offers a number of interesting historical buildings. In Suardi chapel, we can admire the frescoes by Lorenzo Lotto. A cycle that represents Santa Barbara and Santa Brigida’s lives, built in 1524, which decorates the entire ceiling of the chapel.
CASTELLO DI CAVERNAGO
The Cavernago Castle dates back to 1243 and its squared structure and composition of the walls are clearly dating back to the middle ages. It was modernized in the seventeenth century and has many elements in Baroque style, like double internal loggia. The main rooms are 5 and are finely furnished. The castle is used for events and ceremonies.
Crespi D’Adda
CRESPI D’ADDA
Crespi d’Adda was an old workers’ village, and its main activity was dedicated to the textile and cotton industry.It’s inserted in the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage properties for its historical importance. In fact is considered an example of workers’ village among the most important in the world, despite the end of many activities in fact, the structures are perfectly preserved and the houses are still inhabited by the population.
